Having sensitive skin is not enjoyable. The redness, dryness, and uneven skin tone that come from having sensitive skin can be frustrating and uncomfortable. Luckily, there are many products designed to help making sensitive skin less irritated and more vibrant.
Cleanser
One of the most important steps in facial care is cleansing, and this is especially important for those with sensitive skin. Harsh cleansers and abrasive scrubs only lead to more problems and tight, uncomfortable skin. When looking for a cleanser, look for one that is made with natural or organic ingredients. Alcohols, sulfates and active ingredients will only cause more irritation. A great one to try? Boscia Purifying Cleanser, $26. This cleanser can be purchased at retailers including Sephora and Ulta, and it removes dirt and oil without drying out the delicate facial skin.
Suffer from acne? Still use a gentle cleanser, like the one from Boscia. If skin is already sensitive, it will benefit more from a calming cleanser than one with benzoyl peroxide or menthol. Treating skin gently will yield clear skin.
Toner
The debate over whether or not a toner is necessary is still up in the air. However, sensitive skin can benefit from a refreshing tonic. Just spray it on after cleansing and before moisturizing, and it will help soothe and hydrate the skin. Try one with lavender or rose oils, such as the Balancing Tonic, $24, from Boscia. Another great one to spritz on: Chantecaille Pure Rosewater, $60. Both of these will leave skin feeling soft and smooth.
Moisturizer
Another key component to keeping sensitive skin calm: moisturizer! Find one that is alcohol, color and fragrance free, to minimize the opportunity for any irritation. Fragrances can easily upset sensitive skin, so read the ingredient list to make sure there is no added fragrance in the product. Olay Sensitive Skin Lotion is a great moisturizer to try. Olay can be bought at any drugstore and retails for around $8. This lotion is free of all irritants, and keeps skin soft with aloe. Even if skin gets slightly oily during the day, make sure to use a moisturizer morning and night. Dehydrated skin can cause excess sebum production, and that could be the culprit.
Eye Cream
Do not forget about the delicate skin around the eyes. Sensitive eyes still need moisturize and protection from developing fine lines and wrinkles, and an eye cream is necessary morning and night. Look for one without active ingredients (such as retinols and acids) and instead look for hydrating oils. One eye cream perfect for all skin types (including sensitive!) is Crème Ancienne Eye Cream from Fresh, $95. This eye cream can be used over the entire orbital zone, and will help with dryness, dark circles, and fine lines and wrinkles. This item can be found at Neiman Marcus or online.
Lip Treatment
The thin skin on the lips needs attention, too. Check the ingredient list for natural humectants, such as Vitamins A and E. For only $22.50, one should be kept on the nightstand, in purses and on the desk at work. It also comes in four different shades: Original (which is clear), Rose (a sheer reddish pink), Plum (a sheer purple) and Honey (a sheer nude).
